Overview

What is Segment?

Segment, part of Twilio, is a customer data platform that collects first-party data from websites, mobile apps, servers, cloud applications, and data warehouses, then unifies customer profiles and activates that data across analytics, marketing, advertising, and customer-engagement tools.

  1. Data pipeline: Connections captures customer events through web, mobile, server, and cloud sources and routes them to hundreds of downstream destinations. Segment also supports warehouse destinations and reverse-ETL workflows, reducing the need to build and maintain separate point-to-point pipelines for each application.
  2. Profile unification: Unify uses identity resolution to connect identifiers and behavioral history across devices and channels into persistent customer profiles. Profiles can include event history, traits, computed traits, predictions, and recommendation traits for downstream segmentation and personalization.
  3. Activation and AI: Engage builds real-time audiences and event-triggered journeys from unified customer data. Segment's current AI capabilities include Predictions, Recommendation Audiences and Traits, and Generative Audiences, which can create audience conditions from natural-language prompts.
  4. Commercial considerations: Segment CDP uses customized pricing based on customer requirements and volume and currently includes unlimited seats. Connections has a 14-day Team trial, while Protocols is an optional add-on for Connections Business and CDP customers; Unify and Engage are included within CDP packaging.

Segment is particularly relevant to organizations that need customer-data collection, identity resolution, governance, warehouse integration, and activation connected across an existing analytics and marketing technology stack.
